Our Fall Acting Boot Camp is back!! Dates - October 27th and 28th from 9am-3pm. This camp focuses on getting us ready for pilot season! Guest teachers include director Michael Chaves (michael-chaves.com), Susan Boyajian (vo actress and coach), creative director, Clark Crozer and myself - Dina Buglione (db-casting.com). Classes include acting for the camera, audition technique, scene study, character breakdown, basic improv, follow-up technique, and voice-over. We will also have a separate parent class with a Q&A. Call DB Casting to reserve a space - 310.256.0296.

Audition Technique

Let's chat about audition technique for a minute. Auditioning can be stressful and overwhelming, but after enough practice and hard-work it becomes a little bit easier. There are lots of things you can do to prepare before the audition. Having an updated picture and resume is extremely important (especially on LA Casting and Actors Access). Not all casting directors require a headshot and resume at the audition, but you should always be ready with one (especially at the callback). Learning what to wear can be extremely helpful. You want to know your client and dress appropriately for both commercial and theatrical. If you are going in to read for Good Luck Charlie, watch the show and see what they are wearing - bright colors? more earthy colors? Also know the storyline - be familiar with the show - who are the characters? what is the vibe? If you are going in for a commercial, wear something that makes you stand out. I would stay away from blue and green since those are the background colors at most casting facilities. Memorize, memorize, memorize!! The more familiar you are with the copy, the more you can play in the room. If you are holding the paper or do not know your copy, you are more likely to mess up or loose your place. These are just a few tips. Stay tuned for more!!

Studio E's Improv Class!

We started to really tap into the improv world this week!! I always stress to my actors to - add on and make it your own. Sometimes I see 100 people a day for 1 role and the only way one can really stand out is by - adding on and making it your own. Improv really helps us do just that - we get out of our head and bring some really great stuff to the table. Improv can be really tricky - we say think, but don't think. What does that mean? Well we do lots of exercises to get the brain thinking and aware of everything going on in the group and once we are in the scene we let our brains take over and we go with the moment. GO BIG OR GO HOME! Another thing I really stress. If you go big or do something no one else is doing - you will stand out. It may not be right, and we may ask you to bring it down or change the tone - but I can promise you...we will remember you...because you went big and you will stand out in our mind at the end of the day.

Some improv stuff we learned this week...
  1. LISTENING - listening to your partner and really taking in everything they are doing helps the scene find the funny.
  2. STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF - of course we can bring characters to the table, but inside we are all funny and the more we play each scene to the best of our abilities the easier the scene can find the funny.
  3. TAKING EXPERIENCES FROM OUR OWN, REAL LIFE - we do this one awesome exercise where we tell a real story about something we went through (could be something funny) and that should inspire someone else in the group to bring something to the table and so forth as so on. We are all funny inside - the more we make it true to us and our character the easier the scene can find the funny.
Stay tuned for more exciting improv tips as we continue to explore it each week.

21X helps us organize our Actor's Book!!

Studio E was so excited to have Tara Kenevan join us for class a couple weeks ago! Tara runs a professional organizing company called 21x in NY and LA!! I approached Tara asking for advice about organizing my actors and Tara was AWESOME!!!! She created, The Actor's Book!!!

It is so easy to get unorganized and I can't tell you how many times I have seen actors and parents scramble and feel overwhelmed right before they come in to audition for me. My goal when casting is to make the actors feel so incredibly comfortable so I can get the absolute best out of them and when they are scrambling it can be really challenging. The Actor's Book takes care of that problem and lets the parents and actors feel completely in control and calm when waiting in the lobby. The book organizes and controls EVERYTHING from you commercial headshot to the quarters you will need to fill the meter!

Click here to check out 21x and learn more about organizing those books!! Here is a great pic of MaDonna and her Dad who claim that Tara's class was one of the most informative they have experienced since they moved to LA nine years ago! Their book looks awesome!!

"Dance like nobody is watching!"

Dance class was AWESOME! We were very fortunate to work with Joshua McBride, professional actor and dancer with Diablo Dance Company! Josh taught us some hip-hop and freestyle moves and choreographed a dance. This dance class really helped us open up and find our own style of grooving and moving! I do cast a lot of spots where the actors are required to dance and be silly and this class certainly helped us find the fun in dancing - even if it isn't our favorite thing to do. Some of the boys were complaining at the beginning and by the end they were slapping high fives and having a blast! Thanks Josh for such an incredible experience - can't wait to have you back in the fall!

On-Camera Audition Technique

Classes last week were terrific. Saturday and Sunday were both dedicated to on-camera commercial audition technique, which can be very difficult. How can we make boring commercial copy fun? Ask Michael Andrew. He was having the time of his life up there doing his Baked Veggie Crisps copy. We all could not stop laughing! Alex stayed strong with her "hunka hunka" commercial copy, and as usual Miranda made us all laugh hysterical using her southern accent while singing the opening of her Betty Crocker commercial.

Each actor entered the room as they would an audition. They would greet us, slate, and act! We had all the actors in front of the camera. We try to do this every month to get the actors familiar with the camera and to help them really focus and control their energy. Since we are on a stage for most of the classes, it is easy to go really big and over the top. The camera reminds us to control our actions and make it real.

At the end of class, we left some time for improv. Zayd, Ranya, Erica & Kiana blew us all away with their wedding florist sketch comedy. They really listened to each other, fed off one another and invited the audience into the world they created. HYSTERICAL!

Each week the kids, pre-teens & teens give 100%. We are so proud to have such an incredible group of actors and actresses! Stay tuned for details about this weekend - our improv / scene study workshop.

Missouri Lottery

This is a commercial I cast for the Missouri State Lottery. The guy I cast in this was a real WWE wrestler and had some amazing stories. They wanted him to have the "old school" wrestler look and I think this guy did a great job! Hulk Hogan?

Bright House

Here's a couple spots I cast for Bright House Networks, a cable television company mainly concentrated in Central Florida.

The first spot, "Choreography" was a fun spot to cast. The girls auditioning were all incredibly talented and fun to be around. The second spot "Workbench" had a Rube Goldberg twist to it and was very cool to see come alive.

Toy Story Mania

Here's a Disney game trailer that I cast - it played nationally on Nickelodeon, The Disney Channel, and in theaters before the re-release of Toy Story 1 & 2.

Who are we?

Welcome to Studio E's blogspot! We are proud to share our stories and adventures with you! Let us rewind a minute and tell you who we are (just incase you don't already know). Studio E is run by casting director Dina Buglione & Lauren Lux of DB Casting. This is an intensive workshop that meets once a week at The Lounge Theatre in Hollywood. Our actors are all very talented and dedicated to their craft. This is an intensive workshop that focuses on scene study, improv, audition technique, voice-over (animation & commercial), and much more. All actors must audition to become a member of Studio E. Ages are 7-18 and classes are Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesday. In June & January we hold Industry Showcases, where we present all our work to directors, producers, agents, managers, and much more! We also put on a separate show for parents, family, and friends! Our January showcase was a huge success! Not only did some incredible directors attend, but lots of excited agents came and loved our talent! 50% of our kids & teens received new representation! We are proud of each and every one of our Studio E members! You are all amazing!
